How to Diagnose and Cure a Noisy Tumble Dryer Fan

If your machine is making a loud droning noise and vibrating, especially when warmed up, it's highly likely you have a problem with the cooling or condenser fan. Fans can become warped or distorted due to the heat, which means that they spin irregularly, thus causing the droning noise.

If you are experiencing this issue with your tumble dryer, you will be pleased to know that at least you have found yourself in the right place to solve the problem.

eSpares have a wide range of replacement fans within our range of tumble dryer spares, so you can be confident that you can obtain the correct fan for your appliance.

Once you have the correct fan for your machine you will probably have no clue what to do now! Well, we are able to help you further by providing this useful video that you can follow - as well as a written step-by-step guide - to display to you the process of this repair.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar

  What You Will Need:

Step 1 - Switch off Your Appliance

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

Step 2 - Remove the Top of the Appliance & Right Side Panel

To remove the top of the appliance you just need to undo the screws that are holding it in position. With the top off, you can proceed to remove the right hand side panel by unscrewing the screws that hold it in place.

Step 3 - Remove the Fan Housing & Cables

Remove the cables from the housing and then remove the housing itself. With the wires out of their holder, you can now shimmy off the fan cover (using a flat head screwdriver) to gently prise it away.

There is also a clip at the back, and one at the top, that you need to be careful of - just keep it lifting up, and you should be able to see the fan behind.

Step 4 - Remove the Old Fan

Take the baffle plate out (if fitted in your machine) and then use a pair of pliers to undo the fastening clip inside. With the clip out of the way you can now remove the old fan.

Comparing The Old & New Fans

At this stage of the video we can show you the new fan up against the old fan, and you can see that it’s a lot shorter than the older version. This is actually an improvement from the manufacturer and it is less likely to spin irregularly or become warped.

Step 5 - Fit the New Fan

The time has now come for your new fan then...proceed to put the new fan on to the spindle, and then reattach the clip. With the clip in place you can re-position the ring and reattach the cover (making sure to attach the clip at the back and the top).

Step 6 - Fit the Side Panel & Top Panel

With the cables back in place you can now proceed to reattach the side panel and the top back on to your appliance, so that it resembles your tumble dryer once again.

Please Note: With the side panel, locate it onto locating pegs at the bottom, place it upright and then you can just gently knock it into place before re-screwing.
