How to Replace a Spray Arm

If your dishes aren't coming out of a washing cycle as clean as they should, it could mean that the spray arms inside your dishwasher are damaged. In this article, we will show you how to check if your spray arms are faulty and take you through a step-by-step guide on how to replace them.

There are three reasons why the spray arms in your dishwasher are not working as they should. The first is that they have been obstructed by large objects and are unable to move freely. Before you begin a cycle, make sure there is space around the spray arms and no objects are in the way.

The second is that they have become clogged with dirt and limescale. If this is the case, you will need to remove the spray arms and give them a good clean. Finally, your spray arms could be cracked or damaged from wear and tear and will need to be replaced.

To complete this repair, you will need to have the following:

• A flathead screwdriver
• Replacement spray arms if they are damaged

Before you begin this repair, make sure your appliance is switched off and completely disconnected from the mains.

Step 1: Remove the top basket

Let's start with the top spray arm. This is attached to the top basket so you will need to remove this first. On this model, you can simply click open the runner ends on each side and slide the basket out. In other models, you can just lift the basket out.

Turn the basket upside down to access the spray arms. Use a flathead screwdriver to ease the spray arm away until it clicks off. It should detach pretty easily. Inspect the spray arm to check if it is dirty or clogged. If it is, give it a good clean in warm soapy water. If it is cracked or damaged, it will need to be replaced.

To make sure you have the correct spray arms for your appliance, you will need to know the model number. On a dishwasher, this can usually be found around the door frame or on the sides or back of the appliance. The new spray arm should simply click into its place. You can then refit the dishwasher basket and click the runner ends back in place.

Step 1: Remove lower basket

Now we're going to look at the lower spray arm which is attached to the machine itself. First, you will need to remove the lower basket so you can access it.

Use a flathead screwdriver and insert it underneath the clip to release it. You can then pull the spray arm away. Again, inspect the spray arm and give it a good clean with warm soapy water if it is dirty or clogged with limescale. If the lower spray arm is damaged at all, it will need replacing. The new spray arm should simply click into its place. You can then replace the lower basket.
