How to Replace a Washing Machine Damper - LG

The damper on your washing machine works in a similar way to the shock absorber on your car - with its function being to restrict the movement allowed by the drum as it washes an unbalanced load.

Over time the dampers in your washing machine can suffer from excessive wear and tear. If you are experiencing issues with the damper in your washing machine you may notice that there is excessive movement with the drum.

If you need to replace the dampers in your washing machine, you have come to the right place. We have a wide range of replacement dampers so you can be confident in getting the correct one for your model.

Our help to you does not end there though - we also offer you the chance to see this useful video, which shows you how to replace the damper on your washing machine.

So even if you haven’t got a clue what to do at the moment - we’ll talk you through what to do, and also provide a step-by-step written guide to. Following our guide we’ll run through just how simple replacing the door lock is. Fixing your washing machine will give you back the ability to wash your cloths once again with you lifting a finger.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar

What You Will Need:

Step 1 - Switch Off Your Appliance

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

Step 2 - Remove The Base Plate (Not Always Necessary)

The machine in this video doesn't have a base plate on it - which means accessing the damper underneath is much easier. Obviously if your machine does have a base plate, you'll need to remove that (and you might only be able to access the damper from the rear of the machine as well)

Step 3 - Move The Machine On It’s Side

Before moving the machine you need to disconnect it from the water supply and also the power supply. Proceed to lower the machine down onto its side.

If you've got a hard floor, it's a good idea to lower it onto something such as a blanket or a towel to rest on. If the machine is quite heavy, you'll probably need a second pair of hands to help you to take the weight.

Step 4 - Replace The Damper Peg (Optional)

There are pegs that attach the damper to the drum and the base of the machine, and in this video we’ll replace one of these pegs.

The peg simply goes through the hole of the damper. But to remove it is a different matter, and that's where you'll need a flat-head screwdriver. On the side there is a small barb that you will have to press down with the screwdriver - while simultaneously pulling the peg out with the pliers.

Step 5 - Replace The Damper

With the peg removed from the bottom of the old damper you can just replace it now with the new damper.

Please Note: If you're re-using an old peg, make sure that the barb is pushed all the way back up so that it will lock in place and keep the damper in position. And for the same reason, make sure that the peg is pushed all the way through.

Well then there you have it - you have successfully been able to replace the damper all by yourself - well done! With a little help from eSpares, but mostly your hard work, you will hopefully now be on the way to being able to being able to use your washing machine again in no time!
