How to Replace an Upright Lock - Dyson

If you're finding that your Dyson vacuum isn't staying locked in the upright position, there's a good chance you'll need to change the upright lock. So, in this video I'm going to show you how to do just that, and I'm using a DC04 for this, but the procedure is largely the same for a range of Dyson models.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical Dyson machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.

  What You Will Need:

  Step 1 - Safety Advice

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

Step 2 - Removing Soleplate and Brushroll

The first thing to do is turn your Dyson onto its front so that you can remove the soleplate and brushroll from underneath the belt.

This is pretty simple to do, just simple turn the three locks 90 degrees to release the soleplate and then pull the brush roll out from the drive belt. Be mindful that the belt might be tight so you may have to put in a bit of force to get the brush out.

Step 3 - Replacing Upright Lock

Now that you have the brush roll out, you need to remove the soleplate cover from underneath. With a little tug the soleplate cover and the internal hose attached will just come away.

Central of the cleaner head you will see the upright lock. This can be removed quite easily, just pop a flat head screwdriver down next to it and then very gently pry it out. It's important to bear in mind that there's a spring underneath, so make sure that you hold on to that to use on the new lock.

Fitting the new lock is simply a matter of adding the spring and clicking it in place.

  Step 4 - Reassembly

Let’s put everything back together now… Okay so now you have refitted the new lock, start by putting the soleplate cover back in place, making sure that the internal hose is correctly fitted. Then fit the brush roll back underneath the belt. Give the brushroll a couple of turns to ensure it’s in the correct position before securing the soleplate back into place. Not forgetting to re-screw the three locks.

There you have it! You have successfully fitted a new upright lock on your Dyson, without having to worry about the expensive call out or purchasing a new vacuum cleaner.
