How to Replace the Brushroll and Soleplate on a Dyson - DC04

One of the most commonly damaged parts on a Dyson DC04 is the brush roll. The brushroll and soleplate come as one replacement spare for this model, and here eSpares show you how easy it is to replace both.

If you are unsure where to start there’s no need to panic. We’ll talk you through how to successfully replace the brushroll and soleplate without damaging your vacuum cleaner.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.

  What You Will Need:

  Step 1 - Safety Advice

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

Step 2 - Dismantling Cleaner Head and Removing Soleplate

Let's start off by releasing the canister from the cleaner to give yourself more of a flat surface to work on.

Next you need to flip the machine over onto its front. Underneath you’ll have the soleplate and to release this, unlock the three locks using a flat-head screwdriver - it simply pops off.

Inside we have the brush roll, now, getting the brush roll off is a bit more of a tricky procedure because it's held in place by the belt and the belt has to be really tight in order for the brush roll to turn correctly.

Step 3 - Removing Old Brushroll

We can now see the drive belt running around the brushroll and then around the motor spindle.

Start off by removing the belt from the motor spindle. Using a flathead screwdriver lift it up and back and just coax out the belt with your finger. Now we can now pull away the brush roll and pull the belt through.

Step 4 - Adding New Brushroll and Soleplate

Once you've got the old brush roll off, it's simply a case of putting the new one on and again because the belt can be slightly tight you're going to need to use a bit of brute force to get it back around the brushroll and spindle.

So pop the belt around the brush roll, feed it through the assembly and then put the brush roll back in place; making sure it’s lined up straight. Now, you need to put the belt back on, to do that, use your flathead screwdriver, pull the belt towards the motor spindle and coax it around the motor spindle.

This can be a little fiddly, once it’s in roll the brushroll a few times to ensure it is sitting in the correct position.

Great work so far! Now you have the brushroll back on you can put the new soleplate on, which clicks into place and of course lock the three screws back down again and that's it.

We hope that this has helped provide you with an easy to follow guide on how to replace a faulty or damaged brushroll and soleplate for your vacuum.
