How to Replace the Cable on a Flymo Lawnmower

If your Flymo lawnmower cable is damaged or broken, whether because you've accidentally mowed over it or from general wear and tear, you'll need to replace it to get your mower safely running again. In this article, we're going to show you how to replace the cable on a Flymo lawnmower so you can get your appliance back in action.

It's worth noting that some Flymo lawnmowers have a detachable cable that plugs into the appliance, whereas others have a cable that is attached to the switch box. If your mower has a detachable cable, you can simply buy a new one to plug into your appliance without following this guide.

• A Torx head screwdriver
• A small Phillips screwdriver
• A pair of wire strippers
• A new cable

Remember, always make sure your lawnmower is unplugged and switched off before carrying out any work!

Also, as a general rule, you should make sure you plug your lawnmower into an RCD adaptor whenever you do have the appliance plugged in. This will help to protect you from any accidental electric shocks.

First, push the lawnmower's handle forwards so you can easily access the back of the switch box. Using your Torx head screwdriver, unscrew the four screws from the back of the switch box.

With the screws removed, you can separate the switch box and the connected levers from the lawnmower handle. Then, once the switch box has been separated, you can remove the two orange handles by simply lifting them away.

With the switch box opened, you can see the switch inside. You can also see that the orange cable goes underneath the switch and splits into two smaller wires that connect to the side of the switch. To access these wires, loosen the two screws on top of the switch with your Phillips screwdriver.

You can then lift up the switch and disconnect the two small wires from the switch by pulling them out. However, make sure you don't disconnect the two wires connected to the switch that come from the black cable.

You can now remove the orange cable from the switch box by simply pushing it out through the hole.

Now it's time to start fitting the new cable. However, your new cable might have the two wires already exposed at the end, or it might not. If not, you will need to use a wire stripper to strip the cable and expose the wires. In the image below, we show you roughly how much of the wires you want to expose.

To fit the new cable, feed it back through the switch box hole and push it into place. Then bend the two end wires around and slot them into the side of the switch. Make sure the wires go back into the same slots as the wires from the old cable.

Holding the two wires in place inside the switch, return the two switch screws you removed earlier and screw them back into the switch using your Phillips screwdriver.

You can then push the switch back into position inside the switch box.

To refit the orange levers inside the switch box, simply push them into place above the switch.

You can then fit the switch box back together over the lawnmower handle.

To finish, secure the switch box in place by returning the four screws you removed earlier with your Torx head screwdriver.

And there you have it! How to replace your Flymo lawnmower cable. Your appliance should now be back in action once more!
