How to Replace The Circuit Board on a Tumble Dryer (LG)

This guide is primarily here to demonstrate how to replace a circuit board surround on an LG TDC70045E tumble dryer however it is worth noting that 1. The process should be similar for other makes and models and 2. To replace the actual circuit board you will follow the same steps.

When the dryer is not operating correctly and everything has been diagnosed and the issues seem to lead to a faulty control board, then, fortunately, this guide is for you. We have created this guide to help yours through the process for accessing the dryer's control board allowing you to replace the faulty piece with ease and worry that a new machine maybe be required.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.

  What Will You Need:

Circuit Board Surround

Screwdriver

  Step 1 - Safety Advice

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair and due to the sharp edges exposed we suggest suitable Safety Gloves are worn to help prevent injury.

Step 2 - Top Cover and Container Removal

Now the safety advice is out of the way...let's get your tumble dryer working again. To begin you need to take the top off the appliance, this can be done by removing the two screws at the back.

Once the top has been removed the next task on the list is to remove the water container, with it taken out and put to one side, remove the screw which should be located under where the container sat - this holds the control panel into place.

Step 3 - The Control Panel

With the screw removed, to remove the control panel there should be four tabs which hold the panel in place. To release them you will need to push them down, it is recommended to use a flathead screwdriver to achieve this. With panel loose from the appliance you will now be able to see the circuit board and the electrical connectors.

Upon viewing the electrical connectors on the circuit board you should notice that they are all colour coded and can only go back in the one position.

Please Note: Because this repair is for a specific model, If you're doing this repair on a different machine would be worth taking a photograph of the electrical set up. This will help when reconnecting the wires.

Most of the electrical connectors will have little clips which hold them in place and you may find them stiff. If this is the case - using a flathead screwdriver will help to pry them and ease them out.

Step 4 - Separating the Control Board

When you've disconnected all the electrical connectors, it is worth placing the control fascia and circuit board on a flat surface. Now we can begin the separation process -  to replace the faulty circuit board, the circuit board needs to be removed from the control fascia. The LG machine used in the demonstration has six screws and all need to be removed in order to separate.

The next step in this puzzle is to actually separate the circuit board from the fascia. Once done there will be more connectors which need detaching - these are located from the control board to the bracket it sits in. Releasing these two clips will now allow you to remove the board from the surround. To remove the circuit board from the surround is simple - again using a flathead screwdriver gently ease out the circuit board out of its surround.

Please Note: When removing the circuit board make sure not to damage it unless you, of course, are replacing the PCB. Tabs which hold the board in place may become damaged but because you’re replacing the surround its not a problem if these break.

  Step 5 - Reassembly

We are almost done - simply screw the control panel and the surround back into the fascia and now we just need to reattach the connectors. Once you have assembled the the control panel you can now fasten it back onto the machine.

With all the electrical connectors connected you can push the control panel back into place, push the tabs down to fit it and then reinsert the water container and then fasten the top cover back into place.

There you have it! The surround for a LG tumble dryer replaced with ease and without costing you a small fortune on calling the repairman. This repair is something anyone with basic knowledge of using a screwdriver can achieve.
