How to Replace the Element on a Washing Machine - Hotpoint

The elements job in the washing machine is to heat the water in the drum. A faulty element will impact on how clean your clothes are washed during the cycle, as they will not be as clean without the water being maintained at the correct heat.

So if the element in your washing machine is not operating correctly, then you’ve come to the right place where we will help you replace the affected part and help restore your appliance.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.

What You Will Need:

Step 1 - Safety Advice

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair.

Step 2 - Removing Access Panel

To gain access to the element you will need to remove the ear access panel, which can be done so by removing the screws with a Torx head screwdriver.

Step 3 - Disconnecting Wiring Off Old Element

With the rear panel of the washing machine removed, you’ll be able to locate the element under the drum. Before removing the wires from the element, it’s a good idea to take a picture so that you can remember how they are all connected when putting the new element in.

Picture taken, uncouple the wires from the element.

Step 4 - Removing Old Element

Now with the wires removed, undo the nut attached to the retaining clip by using a spanner. However, don’t undo it completely, as once the nut is loose, a little tap will push through the retaining clip and release the seal, enabling you to pull the old element out.

Step 5 - Fitting New Element

Once the element is out, it’s time to add the new element to your washing machine.

eSpares Top Tip: Use a bit of washing up liquid to rub on the rubber part of the element, just so it’s lubricated and easier for you to put into position.

Now to slot in the new element through the fixing bracket in the tub and into position and the just tighten the nut. Recouple all the wires back on and once the new element is connected, all that's left to do is put the access panel back on and you’re all done.
