How to Replace the Flymo Motor and Drive Assembly on a Flymo Turbo Compact 330

When the spring arrives you will most probably want to greet it by giving your lawn a good trim - nothing beats the smell of freshly cut grass, and the tidy looking lawns that you are able to achieve and take pride in as a result of all your mowing efforts.

However, if this garden season you have come to use your trusty mower only to find that the motor or drive assembly has become damaged then it is most unfortunate for you. However, this issue need not put an end to the plans you have in getting those gardens trimmed! In this guide we will talk you through the simple processes of how to replace both the motor and drive assembly in your Flymo Turbo Compact 330.

  What You Will Need:

  Step 1 - Safety Advice

Safety First! Please ensure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before starting any repair and due to the sharp edges exposed we suggest suitable Safety Gloves are worn to help prevent injury.

  Step 2 - The Strip Down

First things first we need to strip the mower, as this will allow us to get inside the appliance to ensure we can remove and replace the motor and drive assembly.

To begin this you need to remove the handle and for this you need to proceed to remove the metal clip where the handle meets the body. With that clip now removed you can then push out the pin - and once this is done you need to repeat the same actions on the other side too. Once removed you can then simply push the pin through.

With the handle now gone you need to remove the lid and grass box, and then remove the motor cover - which is held in place by two screws.

  Step 3 - Unscrewing the Blade

With the cover put to one side, you’ll now be able to see the motor, and should notice that it is connected by two spade connectors wired on either side..

Please Note: There is no need to remember which way round they go back in because it doesn’t make a difference.

You can also put the two foam filters to the side and then you can flip the whole thing over. Holding the blade in place is a blade bolt - and now you need to use the Flymo spanner (which should have come with the mower) you can begin to effortlessly undo the blade bolt. With the bolt removed you can now remove the blade, spacer and impeller.

  Step 4 - Removal of the Motor

Once the impeller has been removed you will now be able to see that the motor and drive assembly is being held together by eight screws. These should be torx screws, so using a torx head bit you can start to loosen the assembly. However please be wary, as once the last screw is removed the assembly will then drop - so you’ll want to hold it.

  Step 5 - Replacing the Motor and Drive Assembly

With the existing motor and drive assembly now removed you should see that they fit together with the belt. Before you continue you’ll need to keep the four fixing screws, the little dust cap and also your belt (that is of course if it is in good working condition to be kept). The reason you need to keep these is that they are not supplied with the motor or with the drive assembly.

Now if you are replacing the drive assembly you may notice it appears to look different - however as long as you selected the assembly part number by using your model number then the part will be fine, it’s possibly just an updated version. To begin replacing the parts, first simply pop the dust cap in place.

You can now mount the motor, and once that is lined up you can fit the four screws - however don’t tighten them up just yet because you’ll want to be able to slide the motor while it is on the drive assembly.

  Step 6 - Slipping the Belt in Place

Ok next bit now then - and it has come to the time where you can fit the belt. To do this you just need to pop the belt onto the motor spindle and then around the drive assembly - and sliding the motor closer to the drive assembly will make this process far easier for you. Once in place just give it a few turns to make sure it’s on properly, and once secure you can proceed to tighten the screws, which will lock the motor in place.

eSpares Top Tip: To make sure the belt stays taut  you can push down on the motor (using its weight), as this will give the belt tension when securing the motor.

  Step 7 - Reassembly

So far so good - you have done the hard work and will be please to know that you are nearly finished with this repair! With the motor, drive assembly and belt all fitted successfully its now time put everything back together. Don’t forget to refit the foam pieces you removed earlier and remember to also fit the two spade connectors.

Don’t Forget: when fitting the connectors it doesn’t matter which way round they go.

Turn the appliance over and remember to refit the torx screws that hold the motor and drive assembly in place. The impeller, spacer and blade need fitting but remember, when fitting the blade it needs to be put on grass side to be facing you. You can now turn the appliance over and screw the motor cover back in place.

and there you have it! That’s how you replace the motor and the drive assembly on a Flymo compact lawnmower.
