How to Replace the Drain Hose on a Dishwasher

This drain hose is an important component in your dishwasher, as it allows the dirty water to drain from your appliance out to the drains. If the drain hose in your dishwasher has become damaged, then it could lead to water leaking out on your kitchen floor.

If you need to replace the drain hose but are unsure where to start, there’s no need to panic. We’ll talk you through how to successfully replace the drain hose without damaging your dishwasher.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the drain hose on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.

• Screwdriver
• Sponge
• Towel
• 30mm Jubilee Clip

Safety First! Please make sure that you have switched your appliance off at the mains before starting your repair.

Before we really get going, let’s make things a bit easier for you…if you remove the baskets, it will mean that you have fewer restrictions when doing this repair. You will also need to remove the filters, and then dry out the sump with a sponge.

There could be some excess water left in the machine, so we recommend that you have a towel handy to mop up any water that is present.

The drain hose is connected to the drain pump at the bottom of the machine, and we obviously need to be able to get to it to perform this repair.

Position the dishwasher on its side, so you have access to the base plate at the bottom. You will see that it is merely held in place by four screws, and you just need to remove these screws to take off this base plate.

OK then at this stage before you go any further, you may need to remove the anti-flood sensor (most dishwashers will have an anti-flood device connected to the base of the machine) - do this if the cables are not long enough and restrict your movement.

This can be done by either unscrewing the entire assembly, or you may be able to remove the electrical connectors instead.

eSpares Top Tip: If you choose to remove the connectors, it would be a good idea to take a quick photo of how they are connected so you can reference back when re-fitting.

The drain hose should be in your sights now! You will see that it is connected to the drain pump, many of which are held in place by a clip used during manufacture.

You need to use a pair of pump pliers to get a grip on the clip, and then just work the hose away from the pipe by pressing down as you move it from side to side. The non-removable valve might also come out with the hose if it does you just need to pop it back in the pump securely.

eSpares Top Tip: The manufacturer clip located on the hose is not designed to be re-used, so it would be a good idea to use a 30mm jubilee clip when fitting your new drain hose.

Time to remove the drain hose from the back panel…these panels are held in place by screws that you would just need to remove (along with a screw that holds the side panel so that you can manoeuvre the back panels away).

All you need to do now is to remove a grommet that is holding the hose in place. The grommet can be separated, and you will be able to pull the hose out.

The moment you have been waiting for! Well done so far, and you will be pleased to know that you can now add your new drain hose. Once you have fitted the hose, place your jubilee clip on and tighten it up.

Next, you need to refit both parts of the grommet and locate it back into the back panel.

With the grommet in place, you can carefully refit the top part of the back panel. It can be quite fiddly, but you need to make sure you're putting it into the correct position. With the back panel positioned in place now, you just need to screw it back on - and proceed to refit the base back on.

Congratulations - you have now successfully been able to replace your dishwasher drain hose! You now have a working dishwasher and you can say goodbye to hand washing.
