Fix A Leaky Washing Machine

The door seal on your washing machine door can deteriorate over time - especially when dealing with high-temperature wash loads.

Wear and tear can occur when unloading heavy washing and from frequent use or if small objects like coins are not removed from clothing that enters the wash drum.

Just follow these initial steps to see if you can identify if it is the seal that is causing you the problem.

• Look for tears to the lip of the seal that contacts the door glass
• If no damage is found carefully pull open the folds of the door seal and look for signs of a hole or damage
• If you find any damage on the gasket you will have to replace it

If you’ve followed our other steps, but you’re still being plagued by a leak, direct your attention to the detergent drawer!

If the leak occurs at the end of a wash programme (usually during the rinse stage), then follow the steps below:

• Remove the soap drawer.
• Take a torch and point it upwards from inside the drawer housing. You should see a number of holes which work as the water jets, these spray water to wash the detergent and conditioner into the drum
• If not regularly maintained excessive mould build up can deflect the water, consequently causing it to flow from the dispenser and out of the machine.

Safety First! Please make sure that you've switched off your appliance and disconnected it from the mains before beginning any repair.

For basic maintenance simply:

• Use a dish brush and machine cleaner to give the drawer housing a good scrub ensuring not to miss the jets.
• Don’t forget to also scrub away any muck from the dispenser drawer.

Safety First! Please make sure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before beginning any repair.

Start a cycle to allow the washer to fill with water and quickly disconnect the electricity.

• Remove the back panel of the washing machine to try to pinpoint the leak.
• Check the hoses for any visible signs of damage caused by rubbing or possibly pest damage.

Another reason your washing machine may be leaking water could be due to a damaged filter seal, which is located in the pump chamber. To get to the filter there is usually a door at the bottom right-hand side (but this depends on your actual model of course).

Safety First! Please make sure that you have disconnected the appliance from the mains before beginning any repair.

• You will need to drain the water from the filter and make sure you place a tray or towels underneath to collect any excess water, better to be safe than sorry.
• Check for any signs of damage to the filter seal, any damage would have an impact on its ability to make a watertight seal.
• Make sure the filter and its housing are in good condition and the filter is replaced properly to stop water from seeping out.
