How To Replace A Hot Plate On An Electric Hob

If one of the cooking plates on your electric cooker or hob is partially heating up or not at all but the rest are just fine, the element on that cooking area may be faulty. If you need to replace the hot plate element, but are unsure where to start, there’s no need to panic.

We’ll talk you through how to successfully replace the hot plate element without damaging your hob.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.

What You Will Need:

Step 1 - Safety Advice (Turn Off Your Cooker)

Safety First! Please make sure that you have isolated your appliance off at the mains before starting your repair.

Step 2 - Remove The Hob Top

OK then here goes, you need to access the element, and you need to start by removing the hob top from the cooker or work surface.

On cookers this is normally held in by screws on the side that will need to be removed, (there will possibly be some at the back, and also some at the front behind the fascia - and you may need to take the fascia off, and the lip too, by removing some screws).

Once the necessary screws are removed you will be able to lift the hob from the cooker.

Step 3 - Undo The Connection Blocks

Once released from the top if the hob is still wired to the cooker, it might have connection blocks featured on most makes and models - and you need to undo them.

However, the good news if this is the case is that you can only put them in the “right way” after - you won’t be able to place them incorrectly, so don’t worry!

Step 4 - Remove The Bracket

Place the hob top on a table, and turn it upside down so that you now have access to the cooking plates. You can see on this particular model there are two sizes of cooker plates, the larger 180mm, and the smaller 145mm.

The smaller one is the one we are going to replace in this video. To do so this the bracket that is fixed to the cooker plate needs to be removed, and it's just held in place some nuts - so we've got a 10mm socket wrench to undo the nuts.

Step 5- Remove The Wiring From Hotplate

Okay so far so good…the next step is to remove the wiring from the cooker plate. Now, you might notice that everything on here is colour coded,

eSpares Top Tip: Take a photo of how the wires fit into the cooker plate, so that when it comes to replacing it you can put the wires back exactly as you found them.

The wires can be undone by using a screwdriver, and once they are removed you need to lift off the fixing cover.

Step 6 - Fit The New Hotplate

Time to have your new cooking plate meet its hob! This is the moment you have been waiting for, so let’s get going…...lift up the corner of the hob, and you’ll be able to slide the cooking plate out from under it.

You are now able to place your new cooking plate into position. Add the fixing cover back on the rear of the plate.

Step 7 - Rewiring & Fit The Fixing Bracket

All that is left to do now is to rewire as per your photo and then put everything back together again (though don’t forget to put the earth wire back on the fixing bracket, during this process).

So there you have it, a big well done to you for all your hard work in replacing the cooking plate on your hob! You can now continue cooking in the knowledge that you have a fully working hob once again - thanks to your effort, and with a little help from eSpares of course!)
