My Petrol Lawnmower Won’t Start
Lawnmowers are considered your landscaping best friend when it comes to tidying up your lawn. A well-trimmed garden is a beautiful area where you can wind down after a long day and enjoy the scenery.
Sometimes faults can occur especially when you consider how hard your mower works during the year. If your lawnmower is not firing up, the most likely reasons can be expired fuel or defective spark plugs. Follow our advice in this article below to swiftly sort out your predicament.
Spark Plugs
The function of the spark plugs is to ignite the air and fuel mixture to fire up the engine. To help diagnose if the spark plug is faulty and requires replacing - see our tips below to help keep your lawnmower running, helping to keep your garden maintained.
- If not used during winter and spring, old petrol can stop the appliance from starting up - this is because the flammable properties of the fuel will evaporate away.
It is advised to always use fresh petrol and replace any unused fuel from the lawnmower tank into a fuel storage container.

If you’ve changed the fuel and oil but the mower refuses to kick to life the spark plugs may need replacing. Spark plugs can easily become clogged with oil or soot, especially when they haven't been run for long enough to get hot and self-clean.

Fuel
A lawnmower that refuses to start or stalls whilst you’re revving it up is usually associated with the fuel.
Safety First! Please make sure your appliance is switched off before beginning any maintenance work.
- If you haven’t used your mower during winter and spring, old petrol can stop the appliance from starting up - this is because the flammable properties of the fuel will evaporate away.
- Replace the old fuel from your mower with fresh petrol and if applicable use the correct mixture of 2 stroke oil. (Refer to your user manual if you’re unsure or download a copy from our website).
- Try starting the lawnmower, (the spark plug may be coated with old fuel and struggle to spring to life). Clean the spark plug and once your appliance is running like new, return any unused fuel from the mower tank into a fuel storage container; just after you’ve completed your landscaping duties.
