How to Replace The Drain Pump On A Tumble Dryer

If your tumble dryer isn’t heating up, and if the water is not being collected during a cycle, it is likely that you have a failure with the drain pump. Whatever the reason though, if you need to replace the drain pump for your tumble dryer, then you will be pleased to know that you have come to the right place!

Don't panic if you are unsure where to start, we’ll talk you through how to successfully replace the drain pump without damaging your tumble dryer.

eSpares Top Tip: Before we get going though, it is useful to know that it is often easier to replace a pump assembly, than it is to replace just the pump.

Why? Because of the tabs that you can see on the assembly. Their role is to enable it to hold the assembly to the appliance. These tabs can often break, no matter how careful you are, and for this reason it is much easier just to get the whole assembly.

This video shows an example on how to remove or replace the part on a typical machine, some models may be different but the procedure should be similar.

What you will need:

Step 1 - Safety First

Safety First! Please make sure that you have switched your appliance off at the mains before starting your repair.

Step 2 - Assemble The Drain Pump

If you have a pump assembly kit, and it needs to be connected together, then put the actuator into the float and attach that to the assembly. Follow this by putting the pump into the housing, and just clip it into place - and you now have a pump assembly ready for action!

Step 3 - Remove The Old Pump

Bye bye old drain pump…the first thing you need to do is to remove the pump cover from the rear of the appliance - using a flat head screwdriver. Once that is off, you are then to remove the two hoses and two electrical connectors connecting to the pump. With the flat head screwdriver again, proceed to remove the float switch. You will now be able to take out the assembly, and in doing so release the wires while you do this.

Step 4 - Attach The New Drain Pump

Welcome to the new drain pump...right ok, with the old drain pump gone now it is time to get your new drain pump assembly inserted.

Feed the cables through the cable clip, so that they don’t get caught by the lid. Attach the electrical connectors to the pump, close the assembly together and then hook it back on your tumble dryer.

When you have got the assembly located in place, you can attach the hoses. Once these hoses are connected to the drain pump, you just need to clip them to the back of the appliance.

Great work - you have successfully replaced the drain pump on your tumble dryer without having to pay the large repair bill! Now drying your clothes doesn't have to be a chore anymore, it's just a click away.
