My pump runs when I apply power to it. It is very rough with lots of play in the impeller. I'm getting 5E alarms. When I put the machine to drain it doesn't drain. But appears to occasionally pump on spin cycle.

Error code 5E means the machine has detected an issue with the machine draining the water out, check the filter and drain hose and make sure the plumbing is not blocked.
