Auto defrost fridges have a timer. If this has stopped it will not auto defrost. Under the wet wall there is a drain channel. Place some kitchen roll in the channel, if this gets wet it is auto defrosting. See our video: http://www.espares.co.uk/advice/2/2113/how-to-diagnose-a-fault-with-a-frost-free-fridge-freezer
- We have turned the fridge off and defrosted enough to remove all ice from the interior that had accumulated on the back surface . Within a few days the ice has built up significantly again. Does this prove it is the thermostat is in need of replacement or could it be something else causing the problem?

It is normal for a 'wet wall' fridge to cover the back of the fridge cavity with a light frosting and ice droplets. This will automatically be defrosted every 16 hours or so. The light flickering is likely to be due to the indicator 'ageing' and not likely to cause a break down.
