Although a competent Diy'er could fit and 'plumb' a replacement compressor without a refrigeration charging station you would be unable to create a complete vacuum in the pipework before introducing the precise amount of gas (measured in grams) into the system. As a refrigeration systems engineer myself I would not be able to carry out this repair without a charging station.
