It is likely that it is absorbing food particles that may be heating, check it does not require cleaning.

Existing cover looks likes it's made of mica and is quite burnt.

It is huge but can be cut to size and if a difficult shape and you make a mistake there is plenty more to cut again or spare for the future.

Microwaves must not be used without something (food or liquid) to absorb the energy. The cover does not burn but food or grease on it does and that damages it. If you can remove and clean the surround it will be OK to just replace it.
