Oven and grill NOT heating up, interior light and fan ok. Does the cut out cooker thermostat control both the oven and the grill elements ? or could it be the function switch at fault ?

There should be a 'cut in' thermostat that turns the fan on when hot and runs until cold.

The halogen units on the hob only work on full power or off. Originally this only affected one unit but over a few months they've all started doing the same thing. Which part do I need to rectify the problems

The orange light tells me the thermostat and switch are likely to be ok. That leaves the element and this cut out. As both grill and oven are not working that makes it almost certain to be this cut out.

I had similar problems with some of the less expensive Hotpoint single ovens and came to the conclusion it was due to poor internal insulation and inadequate external ventilation allowing the inside of the oven to overheat after a period of time. Try to improve air flow around it as this will help.

Answer this question

Only just over a year old SH53X oven (Hotpoint). It used to work. Now I don't think the thermostat is working. Even on a 80 degree C setting the hot cross buns burn as if at 200 degrees, within minutes.

I think the reason why the element cuts off is due to the top oven thermostat still being in circuit whilst grilling. If this is the case make sure the top oven is left open as it warms up to increase the time before the cavity reaches the thermostats top temperature. The cut out you refer to cuts the oven to prevent over heating.

This cut out is designed to protect the appliance if it is overheating. This could occur due to a faulty thermostat or if left on high for a long time or if the is poor air circulation around the cooker. If the oven is not overheating and has adequate ventilation try replacing this to cure it cutting out.
