The main oven element heated up even though it was switched off!!!!!

    when the oven blew it may have damaged other components which are now damaged, check the switch & the thermostat to determine if they have failed.

The last time it was used it was fine, I'm wondering if it is the element or the thermostat that needs replacing.

    It is likely to be the element that has failed, you can check it with a multimeter to confirm.

    If the thermostat cycles it is unlikely to be the thermostat, check the FSD connected to the burner in the oven that has failed.

Will it be the Thermostat or element, if it was the element wouldn't the light come on but not get to temp ??

    If the temperature indicator light is not coming on, it is likely to be the thermostat.

oven set to 170c...oven heats to 194c before turning off and cools to 152 before switching on again....

    It is normal for oven thermostats to have a significant temperature swing before cutting in or out but this would typically be + or - 10C. A new thermostat may be better.

    One of these parts is used for both the top and the bottom oven thermostats and is likely to be the cause of your problem.
